Actor. WWII veteran, attaining the rank of Captain in the British military. Born John Elton Le Mesurier Halliley in 1912, son of Charles Elton Halliley and Amy Michelle (nee Le Mesurier). His work in movies and television was extensive, appearing in 238 credits including "The Pink Panther" (1963), "The Italian Job" (1969), and "Jabberwocky" (1977). His most famous role arguably is the mild-mannered, aristocratic Sgt. Arthur Wilson in the British comedy TV series, "Dad's Army" (1968 to 1977). Le Mesurier was a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award winner in 1971 for Best Actor of the Year for his performance in "Traitor" as as a defector, based on Kim Philby, living in a state of drunken reverie in Moscow. He went on to play the voice character Bilbo Baggins in the BBC Radio production of "The Lord of the Rings", opposite fellow actors Ian Holm, and Bill Nighy. Just before his death at age 71, he asked that his wife post this death notice in the newspaper: "John Le Mesurier wishes it to be known that he conked out on November 15th. He sadly misses his family and friends." His autobiography titled "A Jobbing Actor" was published posthumously.
